WNCC baseball to host Eastern Utah
The Western Nevada Community College baseball team hopes the old cliche that good pitching stops good hitting holds up in another key Scenic West Athletic Conference series this weekend.
WNCC will host the College of Eastern Utah in a four-game series, with doubleheaders to be played on Friday and Saturday at John L. Harvey Field. Both doubleheaders will begin at noon.
The Wildcats (16-13-1) come in at 10-6 in conference in third, one game behind 11-5 College of Southern Idaho. Community College of Southern Nevada is in first at 14-2. Eastern Utah comes in at 6-10 in conference. Depending on this weekend’s results, WNCC could set up a showdown for first when it hosts CCSN the following weekend.
“We’re in a dogfight here for the league championship,” WNCC coach D.J. Whittemore said.
The Wildcats come in as possibly the conference’s best pitching staff while Eastern Utah comes in as the conference’s leading hitting team.
WNCC’s pitching staff has a 1.32 earned run average in conference, allowing just 23 runs on 64 hits in 16 games for four hits a game. The Wildcats four starters all have an E.R.A. of 1.62 in conference or below:
Cole Rohrbough (0.64), Stephen Sauer (1.14), Josh Brink (1.45) and Justin Garcia (1.62).
Another highlight for WNCC has been the play of freshman Logan Parsley from Carson High. Parsley leads the team in hitting (.298) and also hasn’t made an error at third base in his last 12 games.
A large crowd is expected for the series as the forecast calls for the temperature to be around 70 degrees this weekend. In addition, beef and chicken tacos will be sold at the games.
