WNCC baseball wins its second straight

Appeal Staff Report

The Western Nevada Community College baseball team scored five runs in the eighth inning to come from behind for a 10-4 win over Midland Junior College on Friday in Texas.

It was the second straight win for WNCC (4-6) over Midland as the Wildcats beat Midland 16-3 on Thursday.

“We might have played our best game of the year,” said WNCC coach D.J. Whittemore about Friday’s effort. “We played really well.”

WNCC trailed 3-2 in the eighth when Thomas Miller began the game-winning rally with a walk. Andrew Reid was then hit by a pitch and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.

Anthony Garcia followed with an RBI single and Reid also scored when the left fielder made an error on the play to make it 4-3. The Wildcats then took advantage of several wild pitches and passed balls and went on to steal three bases in the inning. Chuck Howard also had an RBI double off the centerfield wall during the rally.

Cole Rohrbough was excellent in his start, allowing two runs on three hits through six innings while striking out 11 and walking three. “Rohbough gave us a great game,” Whittemore said.

Josh Creveling gave up a run in the seventh as Midland took a 3-2 lead. But Creveling went on to pitch three innings for the win, allowing another unearned run in the ninth.

Kyle Bondurant was 2-for-5 with an RBI, Miller, Pat Grennan and Howard all had two hits, Kevin Schlange doubled and Ryan Simpson and Logan Parsley each added a hit for WNCC.

WNCC travels to New Mexico today for a doubleheader against New Mexico Junior College. New Mexico was the No. 1 ranked team in the nation last year from start to finish during the regular season before losing in the playoffs and was the nation’s preseason No. 11 ranked team entering this season.

“They’re the real deal,” Whittemore said.
