WNCC golf event set

Staff Reports

In a rare combination of golf and motorcycles, the featured drawing prize at the fourth annual Western Nevada Community College Foundation golf tournament will be a customized Harley-Davidson.

The tournament will tee off at Washoe Valley’s Thunder Canyon with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, Aug. 13. Tee prizes, refreshments on the course, a kickoff party the evening before, and a barbecue lunch following the event will be featured.

Golfers will play in a scramble format and have a chance to win prizes in closest to the hole and longest drive contests. There are also four prizes for a hole-in-one on a par-3 hole: Two automobiles, a motorcycle and a personal watercraft.

“The WNCC Golf Classic is one of our most popular fund-raising events of the year,” WNCC vice president of institutional advancement Helaine Jesse said.

This year the tournament will provide funds for two projects: The Jack C. Davis Observatory, which is being built on the Carson City campus, and scholarships for the college’s golf facilities management program.

“We are really pleased with the turnout so far,” Jesse said. “Sign-ups have been coming in steadily, and we expect to reach the tournament limit of 32 teams.”

Other drawing prizes will be 50 rounds of golf at Eagle Valley Golf Course and gift certificates for dinners, lunches, massages and golf rounds. Tee prizes will include a golf towel, tees, cigars and ball markers. For the first time this year each foursome will receive a mounted team photo.

Cost for the tournament is $800 for a corporate team, which includes four golfers for all events, a company sign on a tee or green and eight persons at the awards barbecue. The cost for an individual player is $150.

Tickets for a chance to win the Harley-Davidson are $5 each or six for $25. A maximum of 2,000 tickets will be sold.
