Wonders sweep two

Staff Reports

In the less than two years they’ve been around, the Nevada Wonders had their most impressive weekend.

In a road trip to the Pacific Northwest, the Wonders swept their two opponents, beating the Cascade Surge for the second time this season 3-2 on Saturday. The Wonders also defeated the Yakima Reds 3-1 on Friday.

The Wonders (5-10-1) have won five games this season after winning just one game all of last year. The Wonders will return home for a 7 p.m. game Friday against the BYU Cougars.

The wins over Cascade and Yakima were impressive because Cascade has a win and a tie this season over Premiere Development League power, the Fresno Fuego, and the Reds beat the Fuego 4-2 over the weekend.

Against Cascade, the Wonders won in injury time in the 91st minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after Sam Sneed was knocked down in the penalty box twice. Stanton Smith scored the game-winner on the penalty kick.

The Wonders allowed a goal in the first two minutes to fall behind 1-0 against the Cascade. But the they came back to tie the score 1-1 at halftime when Sam Sneed scored on a header. After Cascade took a 2-1 lead, Audren Cashman drove half the field through the Cascade defense and sent a shot from 18 yards that bounced off the pole and into the left side of the net to tie the score 2-2.

Sneed, Cashman and Abraham Martinez all scored goals in the win against Yakima.
