Discovering why men collect guns

An interest in guns or rifles does not run in my family, or in most typical Latvian families. In fact, it took me a while to remember the word for "bullet" in Latvian because the only time I have ever heard it used was in describing the "flying bullets" of war. The gun, as such, has no romantic appeal in Latvian culture. So, how to explain my own metamorphosis from "gun-shy" to its opposite?

New year, new tastes

Well today marks the end of one year and tomorrow the start of another. I hope if 2008 wasn't the best for you that 2009 will be better.

New Year investment resolutions

Here are a few New Year's resolutions I believe are easier to stick with than many of the traditional January vows. You do not have to overcome big obstacles to follow these tenets of investing, just develop a few good habits.

Congress and the market regulators

So you opened your brokerage account statement and after picking yourself off the floor, you wonder how could it be this bad. You diversified. You rotated. Kitchen gifts to redeem procrastinators

A wise man once said that regardless of what day it is, there's only one shopping day left until Christmas. And that's December 24th. I am the poster child for procrastinating or even worse, relying on my formidable skills at apologizing or making excuses as to why there's nothing under the tree.

Balancing investment losses and gains with taxes in mind

You may be wondering whether its time to realize some of the losses and gains on your portfolio holdings. While I don't think any investment decision should be made on the basis of taxes alone, you should be aware of current tax law, which may help you cover some of your losses.

When the Titanic left Southampton, England, on April 14, 1912 it got many things right. The food was fabulous. The orchestra was grand. The service was impeccable. The surroundings were luxurious. There was much to make it a wonderful trip.

When I was growing up in the 1950s one of my earliest Christmas memories has to do with a bike my dad was fixing up. As I recall he found it in the dump and brought it home.

Natural selection won't work in this case

The greatest potential for disaster or real reform is starting to unfold in this country. While we have all been watching the stock market rise and fall on a daily basis till it became meaningless as an indicator of the economy, the number of Americans who have stopped taking their medication on a regular basis has also steadily declined.

Letters to the editor

I am stating my opinion and my emotions in this article in hope that it will be published so that the people of Carson can be enlightened of a problem that you might experience if you are a teenager or if you encounter a disrespectful officer of the peace. I am a 16-year-old Carson resident and like most every other teen I don't like most of the police officers in this town.

The young voters were informed

Young adults who voted for President-elect Obama are catching a lot of flak from disappointed Republicans in Carson City. This quote from Conrad Velin in a Nevada Appeal commentary a couple of weeks ago epitomizes what we're hearing: "I feel a profound sense of sadness for the young people who bought into the Obama hype.
