Mayor Lori Bagwell often wears a Nevada-shaped necklace (she designed it herself) and sells jewelry to benefit literacy programs, said WNC instructor Raquel Johnson during COABE’s awards ceremony.

The National Coalition on Adult Basic Education presented Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell with the Champion for Adult Education Legislative Leadership Award this week.
Angela Holt, the College & Career Readiness ACCEL Program director at Western Nevada College, nominated Bagwell for the award.
“She has been such a constant champion of adults in our community seeking education,” Holt told the Appeal. “We know that whenever there’s a need or a place where she can lend a hand, she’s always there.”
The award recognizes Bagwell and Carson City for supporting literacy, vocational training, and higher education.
In a prerecorded presentation, the mayor touted WNC’s ACCEL Program and highlighted a pilot program from 2015 that made the Carson City Library the first library in the nation to offer entry level manufacturing certification.
“I am sincerely grateful for the recognition of being a staunch advocate of the many adult education opportunities in Carson City,” she said.
