CAPS: These Griffons are loyal and great hunters

Dear reader, during a recent art workshop the subject of dogs came up and a breed I was not familiar with became the object of our conversation. Claudia was bursting with pride when she showed us the photos of Seaview Cool Hand Luc, her new pup who is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.

As it turns out, the Griffon breed is a collection of hunting breeds categorized into scent hounds and pointers. There are actually three types recognized by the International Federation of Animals: the Griffon Van Deen, the Wire-Haired Pointer, and the Smouge.

Renowned as the supreme gun dog, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon’s (WPG) name comes from its coarse, long, low-shedding coat that covers the entire body. The name “Griffon” is French but WPG is of pure Dutch origin developed to work in the polders or marshy ground found in the Netherlands.

Among sporting dogs, the WPG is a rare breed. In 2005, there were only 88 litters registered in the USA. What makes this breed so special? They are known as a walking hunter’s breed because they stay relatively close to their hunter all day. WPG are methodical in their work, have an effortless gait, can work all day and be ready to go the next day.

These dogs are water babies and their double coat allows them to withstand cold water. They are excellent companions for hunting quail, pheasant, chukar, and grouse. WPG’s learn quickly and get bored with repetition. Smart and sensitive, they can get their feelings hurt if reprimanded too sternly.

One of the greatest assets of this breed is their sweet, friendly personality. Attached to their master and home, they guard their family with vigilance. Seaview Cool Hand Luc has found a place in the home and hearts of Claudia’s family. He will undoubtedly become a valuable bird dog and the coolest paw in the hunting community.
