James “Jim” Lester Flegal 
March 26, 1951 - December 7, 2021
In Memory of James Lester Flegal
Jim was born in Pasadena, California. He was third of four children born to Blaine and Margaret Flegal. He was a graduate of Glendora High School; running cross country was his extra-curricular activity. He completed his AA Degree at Citrus Community College in Azusa, California.
Jim served honorably in the U.S. Air Force for four years achieving the rank of Sergeant. Most of his tour of duty was as a helicopter mechanic stationed in El Centro, California. For many years he worked as a Land Surveyor Tech for San Luis Obispo County, Dept. of Roads, and later Engineering. After retiring he moved to Nevada. He was again employed in a Land Surveying position for the Nevada Dept. of Transportation leading to his second retirement.
Jim had a passion to play praise music, including playing his guitar at the men’s prayer breakfast at his local Four-Square Church and he composed and recorded two original CD’s. Jim was an enthusiast and collector of remote-control models of trains, planes, and helicopters. He volunteered for several years in various positions at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Jim was recognized for over 1,000 hours of volunteer service. Jim was an avid Star “Trekkie” and a fan of Star Wars, even at 70, as evidenced by his Lego assembling of a model of the Star Trek Enterprise, and he had an actual working model of R2D2 robot that he’d turn loose in his house.
Later in life, Jim expanded his horizons by traveling back East to major cities of historical interest along the Atlantic coast. One particular destination Jim was excited about was touring Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The highlight for Jim was actually driving behind the wheel of a high speed race car on an actual racetrack guided by prior instruction of a professional race car driver. He toured seven National Parks in the West, some along with his mother. Very late in his life he did a surprising tour of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Jim was a brain stroke survivor from which he never quite fully recovered. However, his Carson City neighbors and friends still received benefits of his handy man skills and acts of kind works. The deceased was discovered in his home around mid-day on Tuesday December 7, 2021 after neighbors reportedly had not seen him for several days. The cause of death was attributed primarily to Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease.
Preceding Jim in death, were his parents and his brother Phil. Surviving siblings are Nita (Randy), Janet (John), and sister-in-law Marianne. Other survivors: nephews and nieces: Andrew (Devon), Matthew (Liz), Nathan, Derek and Anna (James); three great nephews and a niece: Connor, Collin, Finn and Annabel.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors is planned for Friday, February 11th, 2022 at 11:00 am at Walton’s Funeral and Cremation – Chapel of the Valley, 1281 N. Roop Street, Carson City, Nevada.
