Sellsted had traversed the highest snow-covered passes and forded raging rivers during her hike from Mexico to Canada when she ran into trouble in the high Sierra Nevada mountains. While crossing a log over a rushing creek in Yosemite National Park, Calif., the Seattle woman fell in the deep water and was gasping for air as the weight of her backpack pushed her under.
