NORTHSTAR - The race dubbed the "ultimate Tahoe challenge" is coming to Northstar-at-Tahoe Aug. 25 and 26 to push local and visiting mountain bikers to their limits.
The fourth annual Toyota 24 Hours Of Tahoe Mountain Bike race will kick off Saturday, Aug. 25, at 10:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies, before individuals and teams take off for a 24-hour adventure race from noon to noon.
Open to men, women, junior and master riders, athletes can either compete solo or in teams of two to five riders. Solo racers must be 18 years of age or older.
Athletes will be awake all night, donning headlamps as they ride through the night and into the morning of Aug. 26 on Northstar's mountain bike trails.
This is the second year the event has been held at Northstar, after moving from Donner Pass for the 2000 race.
The 24 Hours Of Tahoe race is one event in a series of 24-hour mountain bike races organized by Granny Gear Productions, a sports marketing company based in Davis, W.V.
The races are conducted relay-style and emphasize teamwork, camaraderie and fun.
The cost to compete in the race ranges from $110 to $300 per racer, depending on race class.
An awards ceremony will be held Aug. 26 at 2:30 p.m., where top finishers from each race class will be presented with cash or prizes.
