Affiliation discussions and the continuing controversy surrounding the development of Andersen Field will highlight Carson-Tahoe Hospital's meetings today.

At 5 p.m. the Board of Trustees will discuss affiliation proposals and alternatives, possibly narrowing the current list of proposals from health care entities Triad, Universal, Sutter as well as seven other structural options.

"I'm not not sure a decision will be made tomorrow night, but we are looking for Board (of Trustees) direction as to which proposals to negotiate," chief financial officer Ron Telles said Wednesday.

A discussion concerning the Andersen property proposal is slated for the building committee meeting at 6 p.m., and the finance committee at 6:45 p.m. Andersen Field is a 7.8-acre pasture bordered by Mountain Street near the hospital. Owner Ira "Andy" Andersen has offered to lease this pasture to the hospital for development.

Carson-Tahoe engaged the services of land planner George Szabo to facilitate discussions regarding this property with neighboring land owners and residents.

Carson-Tahoe will either abandon the idea or proceed with fact finding to Carson City's community development department.

In other business:

- A projected $90 million needed for capital projects should be defined. In the future, these funds will be critical in maintaining Carson-Tahoe's competitive edge, according to chief executive officer Steve Smith. To ignore this capital need would mean the eventual siphoning off of lucrative services to larger health care entities, which could ultimately strangle the hospital financially.

- The finance committee will explore the use of sign-on bonuses for diffiult positions. Offering sign-on bonuses would be used to draw nurses and ease that critical shortage, but the long-range effects on the existing work force could be negative.
