Galena girls too much for Tigers

The Galena girls basketball team used a 14-0 run in the first half to take control in a 57-33 win at Douglas Tuesday night.


Douglas led 8-6 when Galena went on a 14-0 run to take a 20-8 lead midway through the second quarter. Galena's Kellie Burton and Joanna Hixon each scored six points and the Tigers missed 12 straight shots during the run. The Grizzlies went on to take a 27-14 halftime lead and outscored Douglas 14-5 in the third quarter to take a 41-19 advantage.


The Tigers were bothered by Galena's pressure defense as they comitted 22 turnovers.


Burton led Galena with 18 points and seven rebounds. Burton came out of the game with 37 seconds left in the first half with a twisted ankle, but returned in the second half.


Hixon also had a strong game for Galena with 16 points, four steals and seven rebounds. Steph Luongo hit two three-pointers on her way to scoring 10 points for the Grizzlies.


Annie Baxter had three steals and three rebounds and effectively ran Galena's offense at point guard.


In her first varsity start, Douglas sophomore Emily Haas posted a double double with 13 points and seven rebounds. Tarrah Kizer added eight points, six rebounds and two steals, Lisa Doner had six rebounds and Lindsey Rollins added two steals for Douglas.
