Gas prices have begun softening in Carson City, some vendors said Friday, though the average price of a gallon of unleaded still stands 12 cents higher than three weeks ago.
A Nevada Appeal survey of 10 stations Friday showed an average price of $1.73, compared with $1.61 on June 20. The average price on April 4 was $1.77.
Prices at the Gas and Save on South Carson Street and Eagle Gas on North Carson Street were lowered Wednesday night from $1.66.9 to $1.59.9.
Anila Naz said she decided to lower the prices at the two family-owned stations to stimulate business.
"With the price so high, business was not really great. I thought people were staying away from driving so I decided to give them a break and do something about it," Naz said Friday.
"Of course, I'm not making a lot out of it, but business has picked up and is doing wonderful - that's what we wanted."
Bob Lamkin, owner of Bob's Texaco, said his wholesale price began to drop late this week, so he was able to drop the station's price 2 cents Thursday and 2 cents more Friday to $1.79.9.
"I kind of predict a continued trend of reductions until the next major holiday," Lamkin said.
Roger Diez of Dayton, who announces at major motor sports events, said he was in the Midwest last weekend for a job at RoadAmerica and noticed that gas prices there have dropped substantially.
"It wasn't that long ago you heard all the yelling about $2 a gallon for gas in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas," Diez said. "Last weekend I was able to buy regular for $1.63.9 a gallon."
