WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Jim gibbons says the federal Department of Education has awarded $385,000 to the Nevada Department of Prisons to fund an educational training program developed by inmates and staff of the prison system.

The money will fund a program under the Life Skills for State and Local Prisoners program that includes vocational training, literacy and math as well as English as a Second Language training for those who need it.

"The funding this grant provides will help those men and women convicted of a crime to gain an education and rehabilitate themselves so that, upon their release, they can become productive members of their families and our community," Gibbons said.

The federal money will support the program while other funding and community resources are developed to sustain and expand it.

The program was developed by inmates and staff at the prison system.
