GERLACH - Four farm workers were behind bars Tuesday for allegedly beating a foreman when he refused to pay them more money for the garlic they had picked.

Washoe County sheriff's deputies said the brawl at Orient Farms in Gerlach took place at a bunkhouse after the workers confronted foreman Jose Razo-Palonares on Sunday night.

The victim was covered with a blanket and beaten with a broomstick and board, authorities said.

Razo-Palonares was taken to Washoe Medical Center in Reno, where he was treated for three broken ribs. He was released from the hospital on Monday.

Four other workers who witnessed the assault were also attacked but refused medical treatment.

The suspects each were charged with battery causing substantial bodily harm and two counts each of simple battery, battery with a deadly weapon and burglary.

Three of them face four additional counts each of threatening a witness.
