AHEPA sponsors Greek flag-raising

The Reno AHEPA Chapter 281 is sponsoring a Greek flag-raising ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the west steps of the Legislative Building in honor of Greek Independence Day.

A short program will follow honoring Hellenism. The public is invited.

Americans of Greek heritage traditionally celebrate Greek Independence Day (March 25, 1821) as a day of pride, a date dedicated to liberty and freedom, and an acknowledgement of those who created the "birthplace of democracy."

The Order of AHEPA was founded in the United States in 1922 and is known as the largest national organization representing Greek Americans.

The organization is dedicated to participation in the democratic process and being active in civic affairs.

AHEPA is involved in youth education programs with an extensive scholarship agenda. AHEPA promotes Hellenism to assist youth to understand the Hellenic contribution and influence. The organization also contributes to philanthropic endeavors. including medical research, disaster relief and senior citizens housing programs.
