Down to their final out against Fairfield, Calif., and trailing by two runs, the Carson Capitols found themselves in an unfamiliar position on Saturday night.

Jonathan Fender came up with an answer to the dilemma, however, when he hit a three-run homer to lift the Capitols to a thrilling 6-5 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Carson High School's Ron McNutt Field.

Carson won the opener in five innings, 11-1, behind Dustin Pedroia's three home runs and five RBIs. Ken Heald pitched four-hit ball to win that game for the Capitols.

The nightcap came right down to the wire, though, with the Capitols scoring four runs in the seventh.

Pedroia singled Dan Gubbels home with one run in the seventh, then Brian Kleidosty delivered a base hit to put runners at the corners for Fender.

Pedroia hit 6-for-8 and drove in seven runs on the day. He had two doubles in the second game to go with his three home runs in the opener.

The two teams wrap up their four-game weekend series with a single game today at noon.
