Strength in the sprints and throws helped Dayton High School's boys repeat as champions at the 3A Division II track and field meet in Yerington on Saturday.
Andy Gust and Chris Viscarret went 1-2 in the shot put, and Viscarret won the discus to lead Dayton in the field, while Genaro Coronado and Brandon Essman paced the sprint crew as Dayton outscored Bishop Manogue 175-137 to win the boys team title.
"We had a pretty good day, the kids performed well," Dayton assistant coach Mike Paul said. "We thought the boys would have a good chance to win, but we didn't expect them to win by as much as they did."
Gust won the shot put with a lifetime best mark of 41-2. Viscarret won the discus with a toss of 124-3.
On the track, Jose Marquez, Shaun Merrill, Essman and Genaro combined to win the 4x200 relay in 1:34.60. Anthony Martinez, Marquez, Merrill and Genaro also placed second in the 4x100 relay.
Essman was a surprise second-place finisher in the 400 with a time of 52.75 that bettered his previous personal record by two seconds. Coronado was second in the 200 (23.51) and Travis Thompson second in the 800 (2:12.08).
Dayton settled for second place in the girls team race by a 182-174 margin to Yerington.
"We knew our girls would pretty much carry the field events, they were just too deep in the running," Paul said. "We were ahead until the they went 2-3-4-5 in the 3,200."
Dayton's highlight came in the shot put, where Tasha Thompson (34-6-1/2), Kristyn Jacobsen (33-9-1/4) and Rebecca Edie (31-7-1/2) swept the top three places. Jacobsen won the discus when she uncorked a throw of 108-8 on her final attempt, moving up from third place.
Kim Wilson also won the 100 (13.12) and Joanna Slivkoff placed second in the 200 (27.05). Cindy Wanbaugh, Dawn Rogers, Wilson and Slivkof won the 4x200 relay (1:52.09).
Overall, 18 Dust Devils qualified for the 3A state meet Friday and Saturday at Reed High School in Sparks.
