People who don't have enough money to pay high costs of heating their homes in the winter can apply for help from the state through April 30.

The grants are available under the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance program - LIHEA.

"Last year the state was able to help 8,001 families," according to Welfare Division Administrator Myla Florence.

Eligibility is determined according to the gross total income of the household. For one person, the household income cannot exceed $1,030 a month. For a family of four, it's $2,087.

Assistance is determined by the income available, heat source and vulnerability to weather conditions.

More information is available from the state at 687-4420 in the Reno, Carson City area.
