Fernley loses game and Neff

LOVELOCK - Leslie Hines scored Fernley High School's lone goal late in the second half, but the rest of the game was all Mustangs as Lovelock triumphed 5-1 in a Northern 3A Division II girls' soccer contest on Friday afternoon.

Hines took a pass from Roxanna Bauer and found the back of the net late in the game to help the Vaqueros (1-9) avoid the shutout.

Fernley suffered a double blow when Jessica Neff had to leave the game with multiple fractures in her wrist. Neff turned right into a kicked ball off the foot of a Lovelock player, and the ball smacked her wrist and broke it in three places.

Fernley coach Ross Dyer said he doesn't expect Neff to be out for the season, although she probably won't play next Friday when the Vaqueros host Truckee.

"Knowing Jessica, she'll play again this season," Dyer said. "She broke her knee last year and I couldn't keep her out. Keeping her out of games is tough - all she wants to do is play."

Jennifer Richmond had a strong game for Fernley. She started out at halfback, but she filled in for Neff at fullback later in the game.

"She played real well in that spot for us," Dyer said. "She stepped in and did the job."

Fernley hosts Truckee at 4 p.m. Friday.

Northern 3A Girls' Golf

Division I Tournament

TRUCKEE - Fernley finished second in the fifth division tournament after shooting a 516 on Friday in the Truckee Invitational at the Lahontan Country Club.

Fernley's Erika Eilrich finished third overall with a 95, earning her second medal of the year. Truckee led the team scores with 492, while Fernley had 516 and Spring Creek carded a 539. North Tahoe and Battle Mountain rounded out the top five.

"It's tough being in same division as Truckee, and we have done a good job in keeping pace with the defending state champions," Fernley coach Dave Burns said.

Fernley's Danna Jandebeur and Amber Thomas both shot a 97, earning them a fifth place tie. Ashley Reeder's 111 and Michelle Kirk's 116 was enough to keep them in the top 20. Natala Gonzales finished with a 131.

In the end, Fernley had three girls in top ten and five in top 20.

Truckee leads the division with 25 tournament points, followed by Fernley with 17. The top three schools will go to the state tournament.

The Vaqueros will host the Fernley Invitational at Desert Lakes Golf Course at 11 a.m. Thursday.

"We have the talent to beat Truckee on a bad day," Burns said.

Northern 3A Cross Country

STATELINE - Dayton's Matea Peterson finished fourth overall in 23 minutes 38 seconds in the girls 2.6-mile run at the Whittell Cross Country Invitational at Kahle Community Park.

Dayton's Travis Thompson's 19:33 and Nick Pribila's 19:35 were good enough for 12th and 13th place, respectively. Pribila was 13th in 19:35, and Ron Laird was 32nd in 20:54.

Rochelle Rogers finished in 25:49 and finished 10th in the girls' race, while Carrie Macall was right behind her in 25:50.

Ryan Wolfram ran a 23:44, and his sister Megan ran a 28:34, as the pair both finished 15th in their respective J.V. races.

Dayton will travel to a meet in Fernley at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Northern 3A Boys' Soccer

Lovelock 8, Fernley 1

LOVELOCK - Fernley's Steffen Theiss prevented the shutout with a penalty kick in the second half, but otherwise Lovelock had its way with an impressive display of offense.

Ferley (2-6) will travel to face R.O.P. at 10 a.m. today.
