Firefighters extinguished small fires in Douglas and Storey counties Saturday afternoon, with one home damaged in Gardnerville and two acres of brush and trees burned in Six Mile Canyon.

The rear portion of a home in the 1500 block of Circle Drive in Gardnerville was damaged by a smoldering fire, according to Terry Taylor of the East Fork Fire District.

Taylor said the homeowner reportedly was fishing at Lake Mead and had not been informed by late afternoon of the fire that caused about $40,000 worth of damage to the home and its contents. The fire was reported at 2:48 p.m. and its cause is under investigation, Taylor said.

The brush fire in Six Mile Canyon was reported at 5:51 p.m. and was contained and in the mop-up stage by 8 p.m., according to Storey County Fire Department public information officer Joe Curtis.

The fire, located three-quarters to 1 mile up the canyon from its south end, was not near any structures and only consumed the vegetation, Curtis said.

Six brush engines, two tenders and two hand crews from the Virginia City and Six Mile Canyon fire stations and the Nevada Division of Forestry responded to the fire, he said. Curtis said fire investigators were still at the scene Saturday evening.
