Fishing on fire at South Lake Tahoe

BLUE LAKES (UPPER AND LOWER):

Upper Blue Lake: No report.

Lower Blue Lake: No report.

BOCA RESERVOIR: No report.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR: Ken's Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport reported, "Fly fishing has been good. Dave Taylor of Gardnerville caught a 5.13 pound rainbow on an orange Scud fly. A 4.4 pound rainbow on an olive Caddis fly. Also, a 5.9 pound rainbow was taken on a Hotshot lure."

CAPLES LAKE: Ray Winters of South Lake Tahoe caught a 4.1 rainbow and two, 2-pound German browns. They were caught at the dam on a silver Kaastmaster lure.

CARSON RIVERS (EAST AND WEST) IN CALIF.: Light fishing pressure over Mother's Day weekend. The rivers were clear. Some limits of nice-sized fish but nothing big.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK:

Convict Lake: No report.

CROWLEY LAKE: No report.

DAVIS LAKE: Fishing was rated good. Trout are running 14-16 inches with some larger fish. Most boats reported limits.

EAGLE LAKE: Closed until the Saturday before Memorial Day.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot reported, "Fishing has been spotty this week. Windy conditions are making the fish hard to come by. All the campgrounds are now open."

HEENAN LAKE: Closed until the Friday before Labor Day.

HOBART RESERVOIR: No report.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR: Dave Kirby of the Woodford's General Store said, "Doug Busey of Douglas County caught a 2.6 pound rainbow on Power Bait. Another 2.4 pound rainbow was caught on rainbow Power Bait.

PYRAMID LAKE: The Gilly Sporting Goods Store provided this update, "Fly fishermen are still doing well. They are catching good numbers of cutthroat, up to 10 pounds. The fish are in extremely shallow water. Some of the fly fishermen are turning around on their stepladders and casting back toward shore. Their best action is on black Woolly Bugger flies or foam beetles.

The boaters are doing well. They are trolling in, shallow water with small-sized, Topaz Lake-type Needlefish, Apex, Rapala or Tor-P-Do lures or Woolly Bugger flies."

RED LAKE: Was just stocked with 3-5 pound brooder stock Cutthroat trout by Calif. Fish and Game Dept.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: No report.

SOUTH-NORTH-INTAKE 2-BISHOP CREEK (WEST OF BISHOP):

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore: Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters reported, "We've been catching 10-12 Mackinaw on each trip. Limits of average sized Macks, up to 6 pounds. We're fishing in 250-450 feet of water, very early in the morning, in front of the Carnelian Bay-King's Beach area. We are trolling with Herring Dodger flasher blades, together with pearl-colored Apex lures or live minnows."

LAKE TAHOE - SOUTH SHORE: Mike Nielsen of the Tahoe Topliners at South Lake Lake said, "It's happening! Fishing is on fire! We've been catching bunches of big fish this week. We've caught a 16-pound, a 15-pound and several 10 pound Mackinaw. The best area is in front of Eldorado Beach in 140-170 feet of water. Everything is working. Drifting with minnows, jigging with jigs, trolling with silver flasher blades and nightcrawlers. Yesterday, we were toplining and caught 3 rainbows, up to 6 pounds, 2 German browns, up to 5 pounds, and 2 Macks, up to 6 pounds."

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields of the Topaz Marina checked in with this report, "It was windy off and on. Mother's Day was slow. They are still limiting out from boats on the south end of the lake. Mostly with silver flasher blades and worms. The rainbows are running 1-1.5 pounds with an occasional 2-pounder."

LOWER TWIN LAKE: Dan Beltran of the Lower Twin Lake Resort said, "Fishing from shore and around the marina was productive this week. Anglers were using Sierra Gold or Chartreuse Power Bait. Dick Smiley of Reno caught a 3.5 pound German brown while trolling a broken-back Rapala on Sunday afternoon."

UPPER TWIN LAKE: Jim Wilkins reported, "The largest trout on the opening day was a 7.2 pound German brown taken while trolling a broken-back Rapala lure.

VIRGINIA LAKES AND VIRGINIA CREEK:

Virginia Lakes: No report.

WALKER LAKE: Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services gave this report, "It was windy on Sunday. The lake is starting to pick up for the boats. It's not real hot and heavy but it is getting better. The Tui Chub are boiling on the surface. Shore fishermen are having some luck with Power Bait and Smelly Jelly."

WALKER RIVERS (EAST-WEST-LITTLE):

East Walker River: Nevada section: Good for average size rainbow and German brown trout in the "Elbow" area on Panther-Martin or Roostertail lures or nightcrawlers. California section, below the dam: Good for fly fishing with Prince Nymph, bird's nest or olive Caddis flies.

West Walker River: No report.

Little Walker River: No report.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR: Dennis Dunn of the Wildhorse Resort checked in with this report, "The fishermen are coming in with limits of fish, but nothing real big. The best fishing has been right in front of the dam. The boaters are trolling that area's deep water with green/black dot spoons. The trout are hanging at a depth of about 17-18 feet. Nightcrawlers have been good everywhere at the reservoir."

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK: No report. Tioga Pass Road is closed.
