Golf Tip: Practice more efficiently

Practicing correctly plays the most important role in the quest for better golf. Too often we spend our time focusing on numerous pieces of the swing and ignoring the major aspects of repeatable technique.

This is most apparent at address position. My question to the student, "Where are you aiming?" is often met with the response "I'm just worried about hitting the ball."

This may seem a logical response, but to hit the ball consistently the body must be aimed correctly. Golf described in its simplest terms is a game in which you hit the ball to a specific target. If the body is aimed inconsistently, it stands to reason that an inconsistent swing will follow.

Balance is another critical element to consistent golf. Many of the best players in the world have technique flaws but overcome them with superb balance and coordination. The quickest way to save a few strokes is by practicing the short game as much as the long game. if you have an hour to practice, use half for the full swing and the other half for short shots and putting.

The next time you visit the range, take time to select a specific target. This is achieved by placing a club on the ground parallel to the intended line of flight. Leave the club on the ground while you hit balls as a constant reminder.

While swinging the club, distract yourself from small swing details by focusing on balance and the target. Stringing a short phrase together like "target, balance," and repeating it to yourself during the swing, is much better practice than worrying about the well intentioned but usually incorrect free advice from the peanut gallery!
