SAN FRANCISCO - A bicyclist was killed Thursday during a shootout with California Highway Patrol officers after he refused their ride off the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, instead pulling out a gun and firing at them, authorities said Thursday.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was carrying two small handguns and a sawed-off shotgun, said Oakland police officer George Phillips, who arrived at the scene after the shooting.

A CHP officer on a motorcycle approached the man, who was not supposed to be riding on the bridge, just before noon, Phillips said. The man shot at least one round at the officer, striking his headlight, and that officer, along with another arriving at the scene, returned fire, striking him ''an unknown amount of times,'' Phillips said.

Neither officer was injured in the shooting.

Three lanes on the westbound side of the bridge were closed for about an hour after the shooting.
