The Carson High School boys' tennis team strung together enough points from its doubles players on Thursday to record its first conference win of the season, 15-7, over Reed High at Centennial Park.

The Senators won eight of the nine doubles matches contested, more than enough to offset losing 6-of-9 singles matches.

Carson built a four-point lead through two rounds of play and then dominated the final round, 5-2, to secure the win.

"It's our first real win of the season," said Carson coach Jeff Evans, whose Senators' other win this fall was by a forfeit from Hug. (Carson's recent losses to Douglas and South Tahoe came by just 1 points.)

The doubles teams of Jimmy Dyer and Karl Schultz as well as Nick Johnson and Dave Crowell each went 3-0 in their matches against the Raiders. Recording singles wins for Carson were Josh Brekken, Nick Weeks and John McDonald.

Evans said the Senators are anticipating picking up their second conference win of season on Monday at Fallon.

Northern 4A Girls Tennis

Reed 13, Carson 9

SPARKS - Every Senator player won at least one set on Thursday, but it still wasn't enough for Carson to overcome the Raiders.

Freshman Polly Johnson won all three of her sets to up her season record to 22-2.

Carson coach Linda Hixenbaugh said the Senators made some changes to their lineup before the match against the Raiders, but they proved to be unsuccessful.

"We made some adjustments with our doubles teams, but Reed was just too strong of a team," Hixenbaugh said.

Carson's record is 3-5. The Senators play at Fallon at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Northern 3A Volleyball

Dayton 3, Yerington 1

Jeanette Macall had seven kills and Tasha Thompson recorded six as the Dust Devils downed the Lions, 15-12, 8-15, 7-15, 10-15, in Yerington.

Yerington took the first game of the match, but Dayton, now 4-1 in league play, took control of the match in the later games.

"We started out great with lots of aces, but Dayton's a consistent, tough team," said Lions coach Marci O'Neill. Yerington fell to 1-3 in the league standings.

Dayton setter Cindy Wanbaugh turned in a good game with 15 assists and four aces.

Yerington's Amy Sceirine recorded 10 aces for the Lions. Kristen Adams had four aces and Jen Turner recorded three.

Northern 4A Girls' Soccer

Douglas 11, Wooster 0

Julia Spaulding scored three goals and assisted on another as the Tigers (10-0-1) romped to a Division II victory in a game that started two hours late.

Spaulding opened the game with a score off a pass from Sara Schearer in the eighth minute, then connected with Schearer for an assist on Douglas' second goal. She scored another to close out the first half, giving Douglas a 5-0 lead, then opened the second half with another goal.

Kali Schmidt added a pair of goals, while Kristy Garraty, Amy Smith and Ashley Sulprizio all scored their first of the season for Douglas.

Sulprizio, who has been Douglas' goalie all year and has posted eight shutouts, saw her first action at fullback for Douglas. Mallory Moore, fresh up from the J.V. squad, did her best impression of Sulprizio, recording three saves and posting the shutout.

Douglas hosts Lowry at noon on Saturday.

Northern 4A Boys Tennis

McQueen 13, Douglas 9.5

The Lancers handed the Tigers their first division loss of the season on Thursday in Minden. Douglas, now 5-1, will now have to wait until at least Monday when it faces South Tahoe before it can clinch second place in the division.

Douglas won the majority of the singles matches, but the Lancers pulled away in the doubles contests. Tiger Anthony Guidubaldi won his singles match in a tie breaker.
