Relatives of boy killed by train seeking answers

REDDING, Calif. - The family of a 16-year-old boy killed by a Union Pacific freight train is asking the Redding Police to get involved in the investigation into the death.

The Shasta County coroner's office Monday identified Cody Cox of Redding as victim of the Saturday accident.

Family members met Monday with Randy Anderson, a special agent for the Union Pacific Railroad, said Carley Timber, Cox' grandmother. The agent's account of the evening didn't ''add up'' and the family wants the Redding Police department to join the investigation, she said.

Timber said she is concerned that the railroad is investigating the accident that took place on company property.

Police officers responded to the accident, but won't join the investigation unless asked to do so by Union Pacific, Redding police said.

Anderson said he interviewed the conductor following the incident. The conductor said that Cox was sitting on the east rail of the tracks and remained there while the train approached with its whistle blaring, Anderson said.

Shasta County Deputy Coroner Ray Bailey said toxicology tests won't be available for several weeks.
