Carson softball sweeps two from Elko

The Carson High softball team had a solid all-around day in sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday against Elko.


Brittany Puzey went the distance, pitching an eight-inning shutout as Carson won the opener 1-0. Kayla Dunn, who had the game-winning hit in the opener, pitched a complete game for the win in the nightcap as the Senators won 11-1 in six innings.


Puzey struck out 11 in her two-hit shutout while Dunn pitched a three-hitter, striking out six. Puzey was also 5-for-7 and Dunn was 4-for-7 in the two games.


"Big days for those girls both hitting and pitching," Carson coach John Sullivan said.


The Senators pounded out 23 hits in the doubleheader, although couldn't break through in game one after having eight hits. Carson banged out 15 hits in game two.


"The girls stepped up and hit the ball like they know they can," Sullivan said.


The Senators also played outstanding defense behind Puzey, making no errors. The highlight came in the eighth inning when Elko had runners at second and third with one out.


Left fielder Talia Joyce caught a fly ball and nailed the runner trying to score at the plate. In the bottom of the eighth, Puzey singled, Kaylee Risi was hit by a pitch and Dunn came through with her game-winning double.


Puzey was 3-for-4 with a double, Dunn went 2-for-4 and Ariandne Gonzalez, Breezi Dyer and Joyce all added hits for Carson.


"The first game was really a good game," Sullivan said. "We played well in both games. I'm real pleased with that."


The Senators struck for six runs in the first in the nightcap. Puzey doubled, Risi walked and Dunn followed with a two-run double. Lindsey Perondi had an RBI single, Baylee Biber singled and Dyer and Liz Rankl had RBI singles to make it 6-0.


Biber's RBI double gave Carson a 7-1 lead in the fourth. In the fifth, Dunn belted a two-run double after Katie Davis walked. Perondi followed with an RBI single.


In the sixth, Heather Hood and Ashley Reese singled, Puzey walked and the game was called by the 10-run rule after an RBI single by Davis gave Carson an 11-1 lead.


Dunn went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, Puzey was 2-for-3 with two doubles, Davis was 1-for-1 with an RBI, Perondi went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Biber was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Dyer went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Rankl was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Katie Vidovich added a hit for Carson.

Ambir Rackley pitched a three-hit shutout in game one, striking out 13 as the Carson High junior varsity softball team went on to sweep Elko in a doubleheader.


Carson won the opener 6-0 and the nightcap 5-2. In the opener, Kellie Cahill went 2-for-3 with a double, Heather Diamond had an RBI double and Ashley Miller double.


In the nightcap, Kelsey Sweet allowed one run on two hits through four innings while striking out four. Mandy Hood pitched the last three innings for the win, striking out two.


Carson trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when Diamond singled and Alexandria Gascon and Adria Bargmann came through with two-out RBI singles. Elko came back to tie the game 2-2 in the fifth, but Carson answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
