Carson City crowns flag football champions

Carson City's finest from the Summer Youth Flag Football League put on an entertaining display during its championships games on Thursday.


In the 6-7-year-old division, the Fireballs beat the 49ers 27-26 in a game that went down to the wire. In another game in which the outcome wasn't determined until late in the contest, the Raptors defeated the Blue Devils 20-13 in the 8-10 division. In the 11-14 division, the Outlaws beat the Swarm 26-18.


FIREBALLS 27, 49ERS 26


Tyler Pembrook scored three touchdowns for the Fireballs as they were able to hold off the 49ers.


Dillon Morey scored on a touchdown run with less than a minute left in the game for the 49ers. But the 49ers couldn't convert the extra point as the Fireballs held on for the win.


Pembrook's touchdown run, which was followed by a pass from Austin Shaffer to Ian Brewer for the extra point gave the Fireballs a 20-7 lead. David Yamamoto's scoring pass to Gehrig Tucker cut the lead to 20-13 for the 49ers. Yamamoto almost returned an interception for a touchdown on the last play of the first half, but he was stopped just shy of the goal line.


Yamamoto's TD pass to Tucker and his pass to Morey for the extra point tied the score 20-20. Pembrook's touchdown run Jacob McClelland's run for the extra point gave the Fireballs a 27-20 lead. Calvin Jones also scored on a touchdown run for the 49ers.


Others playing for the Fireballs were Austin Barlow, Ian Leftwich, Nicky Nanvo, Brandon Olivera, Nicholas Pembrook, Adam Peterson and T.J. Wood. Others playing for the 49ers were Jake Bayliss, Colton Combs, Russel Maxwell and Bruce McIntosh.


RAPTORS 20, BLUE DEVILS 13


Niko Brewer's second touchdown run gave the Raptors a 20-6 lead early in the second half. Justin Allbritten connected with Robert Avila on a touchdown and an extra point to cut the lead to 20-13 for the Blue Devils.


Allbritten connected on a touchdown pass with Ian Gunn late in the game, but the play was called back by a penalty. Allbritten also had a touchdown pass to Blake Plattsmier that would have given the Blue Devils an early lead called back by a penalty.


Brewer's touchdown run and Brennan Shaffer's pass to Brian Barnes for the extra point gave the Raptors a 7-0 lead. Allbritton's TD pass to Gunn made it 7-6. Shaffer connected with Barnes on a scoring pass and hit Ricky McDonald for the extra point to give the Raptors a 14-6 halftime lead. Shaffer also had a touchdown pass to Dominic Mariani called back by a penalty.


Others playing for the Raptors were Logan Philippi, Rusty Rogers, Michael Courneya, Auston Brown, Josh Legant, William McDonald and Austin Legant.


Others playing for the Blue Devils were Joshua Peacock, Alejandro Iza, Jonathan Sanborn, Garrett Stubblefield, Taylor Anderson, Connor Farrell, Randall Pinell and Javier Torres.


OUTLAWS 26, SWARM 18


Shawn Hudson Jr., Eric Walther and Scott Witter combined to account for all of the Outlaws' four touchdowns. Hudson's TD pass to Witter and his PAT pass to Walther made it 7-0. Walther and Witter reversed roles, with Walther catching the TD and Witter receiving the PAT to make it 14-0.


Hudson connected with Witter on a scoring pass and Walther hit Witter for another score off of a reverse to make it 26-0.


But the Swarm fought back with Devin Hughes scoring on a TD pass from Paul Jensen.


Andy Zamarripa then intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it all the way for a score for the Swarm. On the game's final play, Zamarripa made an outstanding diving catch in the end zone on a pass from Jensen.


Sean Staggs also had a touchdown run called back for the Outlaws.


Other team members for the Outlaws were Christina Saucedo, Randall Marrone, Cory Tyrell, Michael Martin and Austin Sears. Others playing for the the Swarm were Joseph Leatham, James Kronenberg, Steven Carranza, Robert Borino and John Tuin.
