The Fernley boys basketball team picked up a huge win when it held off Yerington 53-50 on Thursday.

Fernley kept pace in the race for third place in the Northern 3A division with the win. The Vaqueros escaped after Yerington couldn't take advantage of two chances to force a tie at the end of the game.

The Vaqueros led 16-11 after one quarter, 30-24 at halftime and 45-41 after three periods.

"It was a great game," Yerington coach Daron Wildermuth said. "It was back and forth the whole way. What a ball game.

"We took the lead and they took the lead. It was just an awesome game. It was just rocking. Both teams played very well."

Both teams also shot well from the foul line as Yerington went 10-of-12 and Fernley went 10-of-13.

Tim Hines led a balanced attack for Fernley with 10 points while Bryson Frazier added nine points. "They were very evenly, well balanced," Wildermuth said.

Wes Thomas scored 18 points and Jaime Olivera added 16 points for Yerington.

Yerington will host first place Manogue today and Wildermuth said Manogue better be ready because they will enter a "jungle because we're going to battle. We may not win it, but we'll give them a game."
