Carson City's Nevada Army National Guard Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, State Area Command, has a new first sergeant.

Master Sgt. Larry Perkins of Stead began duties after assuming his new position from retiring 1st Sgt. Robert Veader of Carson City.

Veader will be retiring from the Nevada Army National Guard in May. The long-time guardsman is currently a full-time warehouse manager for the U.S. Property and Fiscal Office in Carson City. SCommandant Kevin Korcheck presented Veader with the Meritorious Service Medal for his two-year tour.

The detachment's first sergeant is responsible for the welfare of more than 150 enlisted soldiers.

He not only serves as an advisor to the commander, but he also provides counseling and guidance to the noncommissioned officers and other enlisted soldiers.

Furthermore, as the unit's top non-commissioned officer, Perkins is also responsible to uphold military customs and traditions and to embrace the professionalism of the NCO corps and the United States Army.

Perkins, an Illinois native who has been in the military for 15 years, is employed full-time in facilities management with the Nevada Army National Guard.
