Taunya Milligan said Thursday she has the necessary skills to be Carson City's next assessor.

"It's a position I feel very confident I can do," she said. "It's a natural progression from what I've done."

A 25-year Carson resident, Milligan is a licensed real estate broker/agent with National Best Sellers. Besides 24 years in the real estate industry, Milligan has owned two businesses and has been a property manager of residential properties and commercial office buildings.

Milligan complimented Assessor Kit Weaver's management of his office and said she doesn't envision sweeping changes to the office.

"I'm qualified and I'm the one who can do the job," she said.

A native of Everett, Wash., Milligan moved to Carson City in 1977 to marry her husband, Gene, whom she met on a blind date in Reno. She has been involved in numerous real estate organizations.

Weaver announced his retirement plans in December after holding the office for 16 years. Salaries for the office start at $51,360 for the first four years.

The assessor is responsible for placing values on all property subject to taxation for the purpose of levying property taxes and determining taxable value on land, residential and commercial properties, business furniture and equipment, mobile homes and aircraft.
