ROOSEVELT-LANE LAKES, CALIF: Ice free and no snow. The small streams that usually flow across the hiking trail are already bone dry. Don and Elaine Quilici of Carson City had outstanding fishing success on Sunday morning at Roosevelt Lake. They were the only fishermen at that lake. There were only two float tubers at adjoining Lane Lake. The action was hot and furious with orange/bronze, No 2 TOR-P-DO or red/white, No 1 TOR-P-DO lures. Between 9:30 a.m. and noon, they caught and released 19 cutthroat trout, up to 18 inches and 2 brook trout (13-14 inches). They were spincasting from shore on the trail side at the north end of the lake.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing in Redding, Calif. (800) 670-4448: Redding to Anderson: The rainbow trout fishing is up and down. Slowed down with the full moon. River is at 8,000 C.F.S. Fishing with spinning gear with Flatfish lures and Glo-Bugs. Fly fishing with Nymphs and Pheasant Tails. Working the area from the Posse Grounds to Anderson River Park.

TOPAZ LAKE, CALIF. AND NEV.) Linda Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported, "The boaters have been doing very well on the south end of the lake, when the wind is not blowing. They are anchored and stillfishing on the bottom with nightcrawlers. Nothing real huge but the fish are all nice-sized. The shore fishermen have also been doing best on the south end. They are using Power Bait or nightcrawlers.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF. AREA:

LOWER TWIN LAKE: Steve Marti of the Twin Lake Resort (760-932-7751) sent in this report: Strong winds on Opening Day. Sunday morning was near perfect. Lots of fish were caught, many from shore. The big fish on opening day was a 7-pound, 6-ounce German brown caught with a rainbow-colored, Tail Dancer, Rapala lure. Other big trout were a 6-pound, 14-ounce rainbow on a black/gold Rapala, a 5-pound, 11-ounce rainbow on a Rapala and a 5-pound, 5-ounce rainbow on a Rapala.

UPPER TWIN LAKE: Dick Christianson of Mono Village (760-932-7071) sent in this report: Great catches coming out of Upper Twin. Limits were the rule in spite of the poor weather. The first German brown of the season was a 2-pound, 14-ounce on a silver Kastmaster lure. The biggest trout were a 5-pound, 7-ounce rainbow on red/white Power Bait and a 4-pound, 6-ounce rainbow. Jedi Bennett (4 years old) caught his first-ever fish on peach Power Bait. It was a 3-pound, 7-ounce rainbow.

ROBINSON CREEK: No report.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF. AREA: No report.

WALKER LAKE, NEV: Rated as slow for boats, better for shore fishermen. The shore fisherman in the Sportsman's Beach and the Sand Point areas were scoring with various colors of Power Bait. Boaters working hard to catch any trout. Best success was by trolling at depths of 15 feet, with silver Kastmaster, rainbow No. 2 TOR-P-DO and black/silver Rapala lures in the Sand Point area.

WALKER RIVERS:

East Walker (Calif.): Rick Giser of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707) reported: the fly fishermen did much better than the spincasters. They were using WD-40 flies.

West Walker (Calif.): No report, very few fishermen over the weekend.

East Walker (Nev.): Water was very clear. Fishing was slow. Some average-size rainbows and German browns were being caught with either small, white lures or nightcrawlers.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR NEV: Dennis Dunn of the Wild Horse Resort (775-758-6472) gave this report: "Beautiful weather, 40 degrees and sunny. The fishing has been very good. Richard Newman of Silver Peak and his partner limited out on 15-inch rainbows, by the Native American boat dock. They were using various colors of Power Bait, floated one foot off the bottom. A boater reported good fishing on the south end of the reservoir with red Roostertail lures. Ron Woodrich of Elko caught a 8-pound Channel Catfish on nightcrawlers. He had two other, large catfish break his line."
