Local Tae Kwan Do school strong in competition

Chi Kwan Tae Kwan Do School of Carson City swept to many top awards during the Western United States International Taekwondo Championships held Saturday in Las Vegas.


Contestants from Nevada, California, Arizona and Hawaii competed in the event.


Carson City martial artist Alvin Vergara, 10 Gup white belt, was awarded four gold medals in sparring for defeating competitors that held belts raning from 10th Gup white belts to 6th Gup green belts.


Ruby Herman, first Dan black belt, won two gold medals and a bronze in poomse froms and sparring in the women's youth division. Rafe Tackes, third Gup blue belt, won two golds and one bronze in poomse forms and sparring in the men's youth division.


Victor Morrow, first Dan black belt, won for poomse forms in the men's Black Belt division and two gold in the men's sparring division.


Chi Kwan Tae Kwon Do School was also awarded an award in appreciation of the training of officials for the Nevada State Tae Kwon Do Association.
