Obituary: William David Nichols

A funeral Mass for William David Nichols, 63, a Carson City resident for the past 25 years, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church.

A Rosary will be recited from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. today at FitzHenry's Funeral Home.

Mr. Nichols died Oct. 2, 2002, in Sparks at Northern Nevada Medical Center. He was born Feb. 14, 1939, in Columbus, Ohio.

He graduated from North High in 1957, from Ohio State University in 1961 with a bachelor's of science degree in geology and in 1963 with a master's degree from Syracuse University.

In 1964, Mr. Nichols began a 33-year career as a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, publishing several professional papers and ending his career in research as a ground water specialist in 1997.

Among his survivors are his wife of 45 years Martha; daughter Mary Rojas and children John Paul, Lynsey and Seth, all of Carson City; daughter and son-in-law Ruth and Doug Zawodny of Elk Grove, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law Eric and Erika Nichols of Elk Grove, Calif.; mother Virginia Nichols, sister and brother-in-law Mary and Bill Merrill and their children Ann and Scott, all of Columbus, Ohio.

Burial will be at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
