Yerington football stuns Lowry

The Yerington football team created a wild race in the Northern 3A division with one of the biggest upsets in a long time when it stunned Lowry 22-18 on Friday.

The Lions won their second Northern 3A game this year. The Lions built a 16-0 lead, fell behind 18-16 and then scored with five minutes left in the game for the upset.

Doug Payne scored on a 40-yard run, Shawn McCarty scored on the two-point conversion and Zach Howell scored on a 30-yard fumble return. Lowry then snapped the ball over its punter in the end zone for a safety to give the Lions a 16-0 lead. Randy Shumate's eight-yard TD run proved to be the game-winner.

Payne rushed for 62 yards and Shumate ran for 40 yards. Tommy Menesini also had six catches for 64 yards for Yerington.

GALENA 20, REED 14

The Galena football team overcame a 14-0 first quarter deficit and its own mistakes to improve to 2-0 in the High Desert League.

Reed scored on the first play from scrimmage on a 71-yard run on a trap play and added a 43-yard touchdown pass. Galena's defense then clamped down, holding Reed to 29 yards rushing for the rest of the game.

Galena came back on the strength of two safeties by Barrett Young and Robert Turek, a 54-yard touchdown run by quarterback Pat Flynn and Matt Fry's 23-yard scoring run. Mike Sharenbrock also played a key role in the win with his punting and kicked a 32-yard field goal.

On defense, Ben Fry intercepted a pass and T.J. Mills and Turek recovered fumbles. Warren Whitley ran the ball well for Galena, but many of his runs were called back by penalties. The Grizzlies had 80 yards in penalties.

"Reed's a good football team," Galena coach Greg Sakelaris said. "It wasn't pretty. We had a lot of mistakes.

"We had a lot of eight, nine yard runs that got called back by penalties. We have a lot of potential, but we're not playing up to it right now."

FERNLEY 18, DAYTON 7

Fernley built an 18-0 lead on its way to overcoming the effort of Dayton's Justin Cross, who gained 172 yards on 29 carries. But Matt Kramer scored two touchdowns, including one on a 75-yard interception return to give the Vaqueros a 12-0 halftime lead.

Kramer also scored on a 3-yard run in the first quater and Danny Regalado scored on a 12-yard run for Fernley. Dayton's Dylan Morris scored on an 18-yard pass from Jake Deen.

Pete Borda gained 55 yards on 15 carries and Mike King added 47 yards on six carries for the Vaqueros. Regalado completed three passes for 47 yards and rushed for 32 yards. Ryan Clifford caught two passes for 35 yards for Fernley.

Deen completed seven passes for 85 yards. Casey Skog caught four passes for 42 yards for the Dust Devils.
