The Carson High School track and field team will try to build on the successes of last weekend today when it competes in a Northern 4A meet at North Valleys in Reno.

Carson will be joined by Hug, Sparks, Fallon and host-North Valleys in a meet scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

The Senators are coming off strong performances at different sites last weekend at the Stanford and Reed-Sparks Rotary invitationals.

Shaylyn Tom earned a gold medal in the girls shot put at Reed on Saturday when she logged a throw of 35-feet, 2-inches that ranks as one of the best in the Northern 4A so far this season. Andi Villasenor of Douglas placed second in the event at 33-9.

The Carson junior also placed second in the discus at 120-2, not far behind the winning mark of 121-7 by Reed's Jen Oneyabako.

Tom placed fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus at the state meet last year.

Another highlight for Carson was pole vaulter Eric Hasty, who soared a lifetime best 12-feet to place third. Amber Whitworth also cleared a personal best 8-0, though she didn't finish among the top three.

At Stanford, George Pincock ran 50.33 to place eighth in the boys 400 meters at the high-powered Stanford Invitational, plus he ran a personal record 11.14 in the 100.

Shanna Sparks was seventh in the girls 3,000 on Friday with a 10:16 clocking. Her time equates to 10:56 for 3,200 meters, which ranks as the second fastest time in Northern Nevada this season.

The Senators return home to host the 22-team Carson Kiwanis Invitational next Saturday.
