Since sparring exhibitions became fashionable at Avery's, he has been obliged to board the windows up on the inside. Steve Gillis, the "Storey Infant," knocked a man through a window the other night, after which he refused to pay for the glass or sash.

100 YEARS AGO

There will be no city election. The time is up when petitions can be filed. Carson is to be congratulated. The work of the old board has been satisfactory. This kind of record is not often found. In the past, the result was, when people gained power, they used it as an elective office and not particularly for the benefit of the people and the taxpayers.

70 YEARS AGO

Wendover will celebrate the return of beer tomorrow and Sunday with an athletic program in honor of King Gambrinus -- the Nevada half, that is. The other half, in Utah, will remain dry.

50 YEARS AGO

Birth: Mr. and Mrs. Duane Berning of Carson City are parents of a girl born at Carson-Tahoe Hospital April 8. Linda Kay Doty, age 5 1/2, and Lee Roy Nutting, 11, won first prizes in the annual Easter coloring contest sponsored by Carson merchants and the Nevada Appeal.

20 YEARS AGO

Anita Szoke of Arizona has been hired by the Appeal as a full-time general assignment reporter, editor Don Ham announced today. She will write out of the main office in Carson and the new Douglas County Bureau in Minden.

Bill Dolan, a Carson City resident, has been writing this column for the Nevada Appeal since 1947.
