Bowman goes 1-for-3 in all-star game

Carson High senior Willie Bowman continued his hot hitting streak on Saturday at the 2003 Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif. Bowman went 1-for-3 in the Nike All-Star Game on Saturday and was 1-for-2 in his team's loss earlier on Saturday morning.

Bowman played for the Cleveland Indians, which was one of eight 25-man teams to compete in the prestigious baseball showcase. He went 5-for-10 with a triple and four RBI in five games for Cleveland, which drew its players from Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado. For the week, he batted .461 (6-for-13).

Bowman was one of three Cleveland players to be selected for the elite all-star game. Bowman, a third baseman, was one of 36 players chosen from the pool of 200 players to participate in the all-star game. Galena star Billy Paganetti was picked to play in the 2000 all-star game, which then gained him national recognition.

Bowman made the Indians' squad after beating out more than a 100 other players at tryouts in Phoenix and Salt Lake City. He became the second Carson player and only the fourth Northern Nevadan to participate in the Area Code Games. In 1987, former Senator Donovan Osborne participated in the inaugural year and Douglas High graduate Shawn Estes, who's now with the Chicago Cubs, did in 1990.
