A funeral for Verna Mae Black, 89, a local resident for the past four years, will be at 1:30 Friday at Hansen Mortuary in Phoenix.

Mrs. Black died Nov. 29, 2003, at South Lake Tahoe. She was born May 31, 1914, in Liscomb, Iowa, to Floyd C. and Nona Wiley Crouse.

She received a masters degree in foods and nutrition from Oregon State University and a bachelors degree in foods and nutrition from Iowa State University.

She married James Edward Black in Phoenix in 1936.

Mrs. Black was a home economist for state governments for many years. She was a member of the First Christian Church and Desert Christian Church in Phoenix. She enjoyed traveling and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1945; and son, Leonard in 1945.

Among her survivors are her daughter, Ann Grant of Zephyr Cove; grandchildren Noelle Dumaya of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and Terrie Saito of Anaheim, Calif.; and great-grandchild Brianna Saito.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Phoenix.

FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
