Owners of Cheers restaurant off East College Parkway near Sonic Burger plan to remodel and open the building in May as Comstock Casino and Lefty's Comstock Diner.
Northern Nevada Comstock Investments, owned by Scott Tate and Gene Wallace, submitted plans to Carson City building officials Friday after getting a special-use permit to install billboard signs on the property.
Tate said they are still working on the details, but the casino's theme will be centered around the Comstock era, depicting old scenes from Virginia City and Truckee. The restaurant will be a full-service diner serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
"It will be all brand new," Tate said. "It will be focused on individuals and people."
The owners intend to include the latest slot machines and hire employees from the direct area. Wallace lives in Carson City and will manage the casino.
"The bottom line is, it's going to create 35 to 40 jobs and that's what puts food on the table and pays the rent," Tate said.
A native of Mississippi, Tate also owns and operates the Fallon Nugget, the Bonanza Inn and Casino and the Silver Springs Nugget. He has been in the gaming business for the past 14 years and in Fallon for the past nine years. He and his wife have two small children.
The 14,000-square-foot building on Goni Road was built in 1999 and will be remodeled by Carson contractor Shaheen-Beauchamp Builders.
