Galena High boys basketball coach Tom Maurer is becoming tired of moral victories. Once again the Grizzlies had a chance to beat a top team, only to have it slip away in the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies gave University of San Diego High all it could handle before falling 64-54 on Saturday in the Grossmont Winter Classic. Galena trailed 45-43 going into the fourth quarter. University is ranked. No. 2 in the San Diego section.

"We just flat out lost our concentration," said Maurer about the fourth quarter. "I'm not a happy camper.

"It's time to start stepping up. They've got to start winning games against better teams. We should have won."

Derek Lorenzen had another outstanding effort, scoring 27 points. He was supported by Bobby Contreras, who scored nine points, and Ryan Bristol and Justin Houk, who each added eight points. "That was nice to see," said Maurer about the balanced scoring.

University was led by Enrico Tucker, a guard who has signed with Minnesota. Tucker scored 30 points.

Galena jumped out to a 7-3 lead. "We came out really nice," Maurer said. University ended up taking a 33-25 halftime lead before the Grizzlies pulled to within 45-43 after three quarters. The Grizzlies will continue play in the tournament on Monday against Valley Center of the San Diego area.
