A rosary for Martin Rosso, 82, a Virginia City resident for the past 78 years, will be at 7 p.m. Friday and a funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, both at St. Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church in Virginia City.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Friday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Rosso died Dec. 29, 2003, in Carson City.

He was born Feb. 13, 1921, in McAllister, Okla., to Martin and Madelena Delmasso Rosso.

In February 1951, Mr. Rosso was appointed fire chief, chief of police and road superintendent by the Storey County commissioners.

He was a charter member of the Storey County Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Operating Engineers Local 3 for 51 years, a member of the Comstock Aerie 523 FOE of Virginia City and Past State Worthy President for the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a former Golden Gloves boxing champion and a former Storey County commissioner.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna.

Among his survivors are his daughters and sons-in-law Virginia and Mike Nevin and Margy and Steve Schieberl, all of Virginia City; sisters Mary Rosaschi of Las Vegas and Jennie Helfrich of Salinas, Calif.; brother, Paul Giraudo of Reno; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
