Fernley High gradute Matt Lambeth was taken in the 42nd round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Major League draft on Wednesday.

Lambeth, who just completed his freshman year at Mesa Community College in Arizona, was the 1,254th overall pick in the draft. Lambeth's father, Steve, said that his son should return to Mesa for his sophomore season..

"He definitely wants to get some more education," Lambeth's father said.

Lambeth's father also said his son wants to keep his options open, which include possibly going on to a four-year school.

At Mesa, Lambeth played in the infield and outfield this past season. Because of his quickness, the Phillies drafted the 6-3, 205-pound Lambeth as an outfielder.

He had a solid freshman year for Mesa, hitting about .300 in an wood bat league. Mesa competes in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and went 33-22, 19-16 in conference play this past season.

Lambeth is now playing in a summer league, which features many Division I players, in the Midwest.

During his career at Fernley, Lambeth was a three-sport standout in football, basketball and baseball and helped lead the Vaqueros to the NIAA 3A state title in baseball in 2001 and to a state runner-up finish in 2002.
