He may be an optimist, but Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn believes the Legislature will finish its work on deadline June 2 and he won't have to call a special session.
"I think they'll finish it on time. I'm putting my faith in the fact they want to do the good thing," Guinn said.
Legislators are closing budgets, so the issue isn't how to spend the money, it's how to find more money to cover budget expenses, he said.
If the funding isn't decided by the deadline, Guinn said he's uncertain whether he'll send lawmakers home and bring them back later in June or go straight into a special session. He said he'd rely on what the legislative leaders tell him about how close they were to agreement.
One reason he believes they might finish in time is the poor fashion in which the 2001 Legislature ended with bills left hanging because lawmakers couldn't agree on reapportionment. He had to call a special session to complete their work that year and he doesn't think they want to repeat history.
