Obituary: Alvin W. Matheus

A celebration of life for Alvin W. Matheus, a lifelong Yerington native, will be at noon Saturday at the Holy Family Catholic Center, 37 N. West St., Yerington.

Mr. Matheus died May 16, 2003, at South Lyon Medical Center. He was born Dec. 8, 1932, to Herbert and Dorothy Newman Matheus.

He attended Yerington Grammar School and Yerington High School, graduating in 1952.

He married June Valentine June 4, 1977.

Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served from 1952-1956, advancing to the rank of staff sergeant.

Mr. Matheus worked for 11 years at the Anaconda Copper Mine in Weed Heights, completing the electrical apprentice program and became a journeyman electrician. He was a 29-year member of IBEW-LU-401, and for several years was a second year apprentice instructor. He retired from the Lyon County School District as a maintenance supervisor with 10 years of service. He was proud of his Portuguese heritage and was actively involved in a Portuguese organization.

He had been active as a Little League coach, Boy Scout leader, Nevada Boy Scout Council, chairman of the Lyon County Democratic Central Committee and he was a Nevada delegate to the National Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1996. He was past president of the Lyon County School Board, Bi-Valley RPEN and active in local high school and junior golf programs. He was past president of the Mason Valley Country Club Golf Association, was involved in Toastmasters, Kiwanis and 20-30 Club and for many years helped with the Yerington Relays. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, gardening and his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by stepson Kenn Valentine.

Among his survivors are his wife, June; brother,Terry Matheus; sisters Louella Harmon and Jeri Matheus; children and their spouses Debbie and Tim Anderson of Loomis, Calif., Gary and Beth Matheus of Carson City, Anita and Brad Marcy of Sparks and Duane and Jo Matheus of Yerington; stepchildren Chris and Sheena Valentine, Keith and Debbie Valentine and David Valentine, all of Yerington, and Russell Valentine of Burlington, N.C.; grandchildren Neal, Justin and Carly Matheus, Alex and April Marcy, Matt, Josh and Katie Matheus, Zachary Anderson and Ian, Uriah and Devin Valentine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
