The Carson Cardinals settled for a split after being involved in two outstanding baseball games at the Reno Knights Memorial Day Tournament on Saturday.

The Cardinals concluded pool play with a 2-2 record by beating the Nevada Badgers, a Winnemucca-based team, 5-4, and losing to the Reno Knights, a team consisting of Reno High players, 3-2.

The Badgers feature several junior college players, including former Lowry standout Sean Gallian, who went on to Mesa Junior College in Arizona, and former Fernley standout Levi Diaz, who went on to Lassen Community College.

The Cardinals touched Gallian for three runs in the fourth inning and added two runs in the fifth. Aaron Henry went 3-for-4, Ryan Henry went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Mike Handley went 2-for-3 and Murph Gardner had a key two-run double during the fourth inning rally.

Wes Osmer was the winning pitcher, striking out eight. Handley came on in the seventh with two runners on and got a double play and a strikeout to end the game. Diaz went 2-for-3 for the Badgers

Against the Knights, the Cardinals got three hits to start the game against Garrett Banks, but failed to score. Meanwhile, Jason Alcasas struck out the side in the first.

The Cardinals tied the game on Aaron Henry's two-run single in the seventh. But in the bottom of the seventh, Reno used three straight swinging bunts for infield singles and a sacrifice fly to score the winning run.

Alcasas went the distance, striking out eight. Aaron Henry went 2-for-4 and Andrew James was 2-for-3 for the Cardinals, who play at 12:30 p.m. today at Reno High.
