Douglas softball goes 3-1

The Douglas High softball team has had an impressive showing so far in the Fred Davidson Memorial Easter Tournament in Las Vegas, going 3-1 over the first two days.

In pool play, Douglas beat San Diego's Hilltop 7-0, San Lorenzo of Southern California 5-2 and lost to Oaks Christian of Southern California 1-0. In the first round of the elimination tournament, Douglas beat Coronado of Las Vegas 5-0. Douglas advanced to a second round game at 1 p.m. today.

Kayla Dunn and Brittany Puzey have been impressive on the mound for Douglas. Puzey has gone 2-0, not allowing a run while striking out 23 and walking none. Dunn has allowed just one run in two games and was the tough luck loser against Oaks.

Against Hilltop, Dunn pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking two. She also helped her cause with a monster, two-run home run.

Kaycee Wilcks was also 1-for-1 with three runs and two stolen bases, Kristi Olsen doubled and tripled and had two runs and two RBI and Puzey had a hit, RBI and stolen base.

Against San Lorenzo, Puzey didn't allow a run over 6.1 innings while striking out 11. Wilcks had a hit, two runs and a stolen base, Dunn had a hit and two RBI, Val Smith had two hits and two RBI and Jessie Kizer tripled.

Against Oaks, Dunn scattered nine hits. Puzey had two hits and Wilcks added a hit.

Against Coronado, Puzey pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out 12. Olsen was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Puzey went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, Dunn had two hits, including a double, and an RBI, Val Smith had a hit and an RBI, Stevie Smith had two hits and an RBI and Missy Kaplan added a hit.
