To clear up any confusion about a recent mailing in Carson City asking for donations to a Junior Police Academy, Sheriff Kenny Furlong points out the funds donated will not benefit the Carson City's Sheriff's Explorer Program.
"When you donate directly to the Sheriff's Department, you know 100 percent of the money will go to your local program," he said.
A mailing from the Junior Police Academy lists a toll-free number, and a Carson City Mailboxes Etc. address, giving the impression it is locally based. The organization is a legitimate nonprofit; however, Furlong said, his department does not receive any money from that program and isn't sure who does benefit. They are based in Texas.
In July, 15 Carson City's Explorer cadets hope to attend a regional competition in Las Vegas. In order to do that, they must raise $155 per-cadet to attend the four-day conference, said Tara Tuttle, an Explorer adviser.
"We've just completed a boot camp and all of our kids received medals, so we think we have a pretty good shot to win at these games," she said.
Cadets will take part in team and individual competitions such as crime-scene investigation, misdemeanor car stop, traffic-accident investigation, agility and a bicycle course.
