Guinn to name temporary replacement for Augustine

Gov. Kenny Guinn will announce this morning his choice to replace state Controller Kathy Augustine while charges against her are resolved.

Under Nevada's Constitution, she will be temporarily suspended as soon as articles of impeachment against her are received in the Senate.

Guinn, with the advice and consent of the state Senate, must name a replacement as soon as possible because Augustine will no longer have authority to sign bills and warrants as state controller.

And with nobody to release state money to pay bills, issue checks or approve other financial decisions for up to a month, state government would grind to a halt.

Guinn had reportedly narrowed the field to one or two people but needed more time to finalize his choice for the temporary appointment.

The temporary replacement will have the ability to sign checks and other financial documents while Augustine's case is resolved.

If she is exonerated, Augustine would reclaim her position. If she is removed from office, a new controller would be appointed to serve until the next general election in November 2006.
