Douglas defense looks for redemption

The Douglas defense will be seeking some redemption tonight in its home-opener against Elko.

Reed's Ryan Lammle torched the Tigers for 223 rushing yards and four touchdowns last week in a 41-21 win over Douglas.

Things won't get much easier this week, as Elko brings a pair of dynamic runners to town to test the Tiger defense.

Through two games, Elko running backs Dominick Robertson and Jon Morales have combined for exactly 400 yards on the ground with nine touchdowns between them.

The duo has led Elko to large victories over 3A Spring Creek (45-19) and Wooster (40-7).

Robertson compiled 242 yards and six touchdowns in the opening two weeks behind a talented interior line.

Douglas, stayed in the game against Reed until late in the fourth quarter. The Tigers drove down for two unanswered touchdowns and seemed to have momentum in their favor on the ensuing kickoff. Reed, however, was able to drive the length of the field to sap the clock and score the clinching touchdown.

Spike Agosta was a workhorse for the Tigers in the opener, carrying the ball 27 times for 155 yards and a touchdown.

Junior quarterback Roman Davis, seeing his first varsity action, seemed to grow more confident in the pocket as the game went on, throwing for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

He also pulled the ball down and made several effective runs.

The Douglas defense managed to hold Reed at bay except for a 21-point second quarter in which the Raiders pulled away.

Elko has been relatively one-dimensional on offense, passing for only 75 yards in two games, which should help Douglas key in on the running backs.

Douglas will induct its 2004 class to the Tiger Football Hall of Fame at halftime of the game.

This year's honorees include Ted Borda, who played from 1971-72, Ron Hall who played from 1972-73, Cameron Alder, 1988-89, and Joe Flood, 1991-92.

Game time is at 7:30 p.m. Junior varsity plays at 4:45 and freshman plays at 2:30.

Admission to the game is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Senior citizens and children get in free.

In other action, the Yerington High football team will look to continue to maintain its roll in Northern 2A play when it travels to Incline for a 6 p.m. game today.

Yerington (1-1) is coming off a 41-12 win over Indepedence in its Northern 2A opener last Friday. On paper, it figures that the Lions should improve to 2-0 in Northern 2A play at Incline, which is low in numbers and has only five seniors. Incline also opened the season with a 40-0 loss at Rite of Passage.

But Incline does have two of the Northern 2A's top offensive players in quarterback Christian Spaulding, an all 2A state first team choice from last year, and his favorite target, receiver Peter Loeschner.

Yerington also has a big play offense led by Ricky Menesini, who ran for 169 yards and a touchdown against Independence.

In a nonleague game, Fernley (1-1) will travel to Quincy, Calif., for a 7:30 p.m. game today. Fernley figures to face a tough test in Quincy, which is coming off a dramatic 31-26 win over North Tahoe.

Quincy led 19-3 before falling behind, but rallied after driving 80 yards for the winning score with 25 seconds left. The big play of the drive was David Smith's 63-yard reception.

Fernley will try to rebound from a 40-8 loss to 4A Fallon. The Vaqueros have a ball-hawking defense led by Cody McDougal and Bryan Jones.
